I realized that what I had been aiming for in Threnody served as a template for this new piece, originally composed for a Remembrance Sunday concert. From the moment that the commission for And There Was a Great Calm (movements II and amp - III here) was offered, I knew the piece I was about to embark upon would end up being linked with Threnody in some way. Fast and rhythmically influenced by the music of North Africa in its syncopations, this movement was the first composition that evolved entirely from my New York perspective. The texts, in English, are excerpted from a variety of sources: William Penn, William Blake, the Psalms of David and Muhammad Rajab Al-Bayoumi, an Egyptian poet of the early twentieth-century. With this in mind, I set to work on Threnody (movement I here) in 2004 - I wanted to write something that was relevant to the Israeli/Palestinian issue without losing that City 'edge'. Relatively new to living in New York, I am much more aware of the independent, vibrant cultural plurality that exists today - it's probably the single most dazzling facet of the City and is largely responsible for the infamous 'edginess' that pervades daily life there. The title of this latter section is taken from Thomas Hardy's poem of the same name, written at the signing of the Armistice on 11th November, 1918 - a couplet from which is set, in a moment of tranquillity, in the final movement. Movements II and III, commissioned by Portsmouth Grammar School with financial support from the PRS Foundation, were premièred as And There Was a Great Calm in a contiguous version for lower strings and upper voices by the Portsmouth Grammar School Chamber Choir and the London Mozart Players in a concert at Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral on 13th November, 2005 conducted by Nicolae Moldoveanu. Movement I was commissioned with funds from The RVW Trust for the inaugural concert of the Choir of London conducted by Jeremy Summerly in Christ Church, Spitalfields on 18th December, 2004 - the work, premièred as Threnody, was subsequently toured by the Choir to Jerusalem and the West Bank from 19th-26th December, 2004. Triptych represents the concatenation and re-orchestration of two extant works.
Both works, The Elves and the 12 Preludios were premiered by Alcázar at the Ponce Hall of the Fine Arts Palace in Mexico City on March 15 of 1988.Ĭantata for string orchestra and chorus. The composition of the 12 Preludios was started during the Christmas vacation of 1984 and terminated by mid-January of 1985. Both agreed upon this and when Alcázar went back to the Soviet Union, for the International Music Festival held in May of 1984, Koshkin gave him The Elves, a suite in five movements. A few days later, he promised to write something for him, as a way of commemorating the beginning of their friendship, if Alcázar would write also something for Koshkin.
During the first trip, in November-December of 1983, he met Nikita Koshkin during the presentation of Alcázar's work at the Union of Composers in Moscow. miguel.jpg (6157 bytes)The 12 Preludios were written by Miguel Alcázar as the result of his first two trips to the Soviet Union. His publications of Mexican music were published by the Liga de Compositores de Mexico, the University of Veracruz, Tecla Editions of London and Editions Orphée. Alcázar has been a faculty member of the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Conservatorio Nacional de Música, where he received his degree with honors in 1972, and later at the University of Veracruz. His recorded output includes music for baroque guitar of music in the manuscript 1560 in the Biblioteca Nacional, works by Bach and Weiss for lute, as well as unpublished music by Ponce and other Latin-American composers. He gave the first performances of the Concertino by Blas Galindo, with the composer himself conducting the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, the Concierto of Manuel Ponce, in its original version, the Concerto of Michael Horvit, which was dedicated to Alcázar, the Concierto of Enrique Santos, with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, and the 24 Preludios of Ponce.
